Key Trials for the Coral-Eclipse Stakes
The Coral-Eclipse is one of the premier 1m2f contests in the Flat season and is the first major clash of the generations, although 3-year-old's don’t have a great record in the race.
The 3-year-old's tend to either be stepping up in trip from top mile races like the 2,000 Guineas or coming here because they have proved to be very effective over 1m2f in a race like the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club).
Specialist ten-furlong horses would also be contenders for races like the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot as well as the Juddmonte International and the Champion Stakes later in the season.
Trainer Trends
Sir Michael Stoute is the winning-most modern-day trainer with six victories under his belt.
Aidan O’Brien is a five-time Coral-Eclipse Stakes winner but his last success came back in 2011 with So You Think.
John Gosden has won the race four times, including two of the last three editions with Roaring Lion and Enable.
Jockey Trends
Ryan Moore is the only jockey riding in the 2021 Coral-Eclipse to have won or even ridden in the race previously, although you have to go back 14 years to Notnowcato’s defeat of Derby winner Authorized.
Who Fits The Coral-Eclipse Stakes Trends Best In 2021?
Three of the four 2021 Coral-Eclipse runners are rated higher than the 118 mark that has been the minimum for most recent winners but they have very different profiles and ground conditions could play a pivotal role in the outcome.
Rain would aid the cause of Addeybb, the highest-rated horse in the race, who has won Group 1’s on two of his last three starts. This trip is his optimum but he tends to show his best form on ground with cut.
St Mark’s Basilica looks the pick of the two 3-year-old runners on form but Aidan O’Brien’s French Derby winner is another that ideally needs conditions to stay on the soft side.
Mishriff, who won the French Derby as a 3-year-old, has proved himself to be a top-class ten-furlong horse on the international stage.
He is versatile trip and ground wise but hasn’t been seen since his Sheema Cup Classic win at Meydan in March and he was well beaten by Addeybb in last year’s QIPCO Champion Stakes, although that was on very testing ground.
