*Odds up to date as of May 22, 2023

Harry Maguire arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2019 for the princely sum of £80 million, but it's fair to say the central defender has never really lived up to his price tag at Old Trafford. Despite making 55 appearances for England, including being an ever-present for the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup, he has become a bit-part player for the Red Devils in the Premier League this season.

It is clear that Erik ten Hag does not particularly rate Maguire for his system of play, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez the preferred central defensive pairing. Luke Shaw has often been preferred ahead of Maguire under the Dutchman, and a move away from Old Trafford looks to be on the cards.

Football betting sites are now offering transfer betting odds for Maguire, and there’s likely to be plenty of interest in a player who is currently in the middle of a six-year contract at United. That means a transfer fee would have to be involved for the 30-year-old, with the Red Devils potentially ready to cut their losses.

Could a Big Price Tag Lead to Maguire Staying in Manchester?

Manchester United have an issue with Harry Maguire's potential departure. The 30-year-old has a contract that takes him all the way through to the summer of 2025, which means that any transfer would have to involve the north-west club trying to recoup some of the £80 million that they spent when signing him from Leicester City.

Realistically, no club will be prepared to spend anything like the above amount to sign a player who has had another difficult season at Old Trafford. United are possibly looking to recoup around 50% of that original transfer feel, although betting apps think there’s a possibility that Maguire will stay put.

After all, United look like they will be competing in the Champions League next season. Perhaps Maguire will get more game time, especially with Varane and Martinez both having had injury problems this season. The defender has made 43 appearances for club and country since the beginning of June 2022 even if a lot of these were from the bench.

Aston Villa Could Be Ready to Offer Maguire a Fresh Start

Harry Maguire might be looking for pastures new this summer, and perhaps United might also be glad to remove their highly-paid player from their books, especially with new owners likely to take charge of the club in the coming weeks or months. Aston Villa are in a good position to land his signature as they could be playing in Europe next season because of their impressive Premier League form.

Maguire is not dissimilar in profile to Tyrone Mings, who has performed well for the Villans this season, and perhaps Unai Emery could see the merits in signing a player with a wealth of international experience. He’s also someone who poses a threat from set pieces and has scored seven times for England.

Villa are looking to strengthen this summer after Emery replaced Steven Gerrard midway through the season. The Spaniard might like the idea of Maguire’s presence in front of goalkeeper Emi Martinez, with the England man offering plenty of leadership qualities along with experience from his time playing for United.

Would Newcastle Be Interested in Signing England Man?

Eddie Howe seems to be a fan of working with English players, with Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn having all been successful signings under Howe at Newcastle. With Champions League football anticipated at St James’ Park next season, Maguire could bring his qualities and experience to help the Magpies reach the next level.

Maguire has worked with Pope and Trippier on England duty and could be open to a switch to another northern club, having previously turned out for Hull City and Sheffield United. The 30-year-old might be attracted to heading to a football-mad city and the chance to get his career back on track after a season in the football wilderness.

Although Gareth Southgate retained him in the England team for the 2022 World Cup, it’s clear that Maguire will need to be playing first-team football to retain his place in the Three Lions squad moving forward, and new betting sites think that Newcastle are prepared to take a chance on someone who has largely been reliable throughout his career.

Leicester and Tottenham Next in the Maguire Transfer Betting

Maguire’s peak performances were mainly for Leicester City before he was sold for £80 million, and a return to his former club is a possibility. The fact that the Foxes are likely to be in the Championship next term could dissuade the England defender from heading back to the Midlands, but they would have parachute payment money if they went down.

Perhaps Maguire will make a move down south, and his availability could alert Tottenham, especially as they have been so defensively suspect this season. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if any incoming Spurs manager identifies him as a potential target for a team who will be looking to challenge for a top-four spot next season.
