As with all of National Hunt’s top trainers, Henry de Bromhead’s best horses are usually only targeted at the big meetings throughout the year, so check in here for any early entries and their ante-post prices.

Henry de Bromhead Horses to Follow

Henry de Bromhead has enjoyed an indifferent and sometimes disappointing time of it in the 2022/23 season to date. Some of his best horses have struggled for form or have suffered injury setbacks, but he still has the firepower required to win big races.

Here our experts will try to point you in the direction of some of the horses that you should keep your eye out for from last year’s Gold Cup-winning trainer.

Two-time Cheltenham Festival winner, Envoi Allen’s career has stuttered slightly since he may the move to De Bromhead from Gordon Elliott, but he seems to be coming back to his best at just the right time. He has taken well to the step up in trip this season, and although he failed to flatter in the King George VI Chase at Kempton last time, there are excuses for that below-par run.

Hiddenvalley Lake has had just three racecourse starts to date, but he already looks like he has a big future ahead of him. A Grade 3 winner on just his second start, he was turned over by his stablemate, Monty’s Star, at Clonmel last time, and both horses are now expected to meet again in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham.

Another impressive youngster that looks like having a huge future for De Bromhead is the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle hopeful Inthepocket. Still relatively inexperienced, he looks like a star stayer in the making, and big things lie ahead for the JP McManus-owned six-year-old.

Henry de Bromhead horses for Cheltenham

The four horses to follow will all be heading to Cheltenham Festival with strong claims, but De Bromhead can also call upon some of his old favourites, and some more young pretenders to try to continue his amazing recent record at the festival.

Honeysuckle is set to make her final appearance on the racecourse at Cheltenham this year, but we won’t be seeing the Queen of racing lining up for a hat-trick bid in the Champion Hurdle. Connections have decided to swerve Constitution Hill in the Champion, instead opting to compete in what should be an easier task in winning the Mares’ Hurdle for a second time.

Last year’s Gold Cup winner, A Plus Tard, has questions to answer as he attempts to retain his crown this year. Only seen once in the past 12 months, the brilliant chaser will need to bounce back to the same form as his breathtaking win last year if he is to see off a very talented bunch of horses set to be in opposition.

Journey With Me has had some jumping issues in the past, but the seven-year-old has also shown plenty of top-class ability at times and will be fancied by many to run a big race in the Turners Novices’ Chase. He looked nailed on for a place when falling in the Ballymore last year, and if the rain arrives at Prestbury Park he has every chance.

One of the most poignant wins of the week would come if Magical Zoe can win the Mares Novices’ Hurdle, which will be named after De Bromhead’s late son, Jack. Unbeaten in three starts to date, Magical Zoe should run a big race, and maybe become her trainer’s next superstar mare.

These are just a small selection of horses that will be representing Henry de Bromhead at Cheltenham in 2023, so another big festival should lie ahead for the Irish trainer.

Henry de Bromhead horses for the Grand National

Henry de Bromhead added his name to the prestigious list of trainers to win the Grand National in 2021, when, ridden by Rachael Blackmore, Minella Times created history by becoming the first horse to be ridden to victory by a woman. It was a special year for De Bromhead at Aintree, with Balko Des Flos providing the trainer with a 1-2 in the Aintree showpiece.

In 2023, De Bromhead’s best chance of another National win looks like being the consistent and relatively unexposed Ain’t That A Shame. The nine-year-old will likely sneak in at the bottom of the weights and looks like he may relish the marathon trip.

De Bromhead could also be represented in the race by the 11-year-old Chris’s Dream. Having travelled well in the 2021 Grand National, Chris’s Dream was still in contention when unseating his rider four from home. He has been freshened up in point-to-points this year and will be heading for the Hunters' Chase at Cheltenham before another trip to Aintree in 2023.

Two other horses that feature among De Bromhead’s entries for the Grand National are, Gabbys Cross and Gin On Lime, both of which will need some withdrawals if they are to get a run.

Henry de Bromhead’s horses for Punchestown

Much of Henry de Bromhead’s entries for the Punchestown Festival will depend on what has happened at Cheltenham. If everything goes to plan in March, much the same team of horses should be lining up at Punchestown.

Henry de Bromhead Biography

Henry de Bromhead was born in Knockeen, Co Waterford, in the south of Ireland on October 28 1972. He inherited the training facilities from his father Harry, who had also trained racehorses with some success.

A young Henry had moved to England to learn his trade in the training world, taking up work with first, Robert and Sally Alner, before moving on to take in all of the advice given to him by the legendary flat trainer Sir Mark Prescott. He would also spend time working for the Coolmore breeding operation after moving home but eventually returned to Knockeen to begin his training career in 2000.

De Bromhead’s training career started as it would go on, with a first winner coming on his first day as a trainer at his local track in Tramore. Having worked hard to establish himself in the competitive world of Irish racing, De Bromhead’s life and career would change with a meeting with prospective new owners Ann and Alan Potts.

The Potts would go on to form a formidable association with De Bromhead, and when a horse by the name of Sizing Europe came along, they were all taken to places they would never have dreamed of.

Sizing Europe provided his trainer with his first Grade 1 win in the 2008 Irish Champion Hurdle, and in the coming years, he would go on to become one of the best two-mile chasers of all time. By the end of his career, Sizing Europe had provided De Bromhead with Cheltenham Festival wins in the Arkle Chase, the Champion Chase, as well as the Tingle Creek and twice in the Punchestown Champion Chase.

During his time training Sizing Europe, De Bromhead had attracted the attention of many of jump racing’s biggest owners and soon began winning Grade 1 races across Britain and Ireland at a consistent rate.

His training career continues to reach new heights, and he enjoyed a standout year in 2021, with many memorable, and history-making victories. De Bromhead had by now made Rachael Blackmore his number-one jockey, and the pair would enjoy an amazing campaign together.

Six winners came at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival, including a first Champion Hurdle for his star mare, Honeysuckle. It was a victory that made Blackmore the first woman to ever win the prestigious race.

Blackmore also made history later in the year when partnering De Bromhead’s Minella Times to victory in the Aintree Grand National, again a first for a woman rider. In 2022, De Bromhead reached the pinnacle of his training career when overseeing A Plus Tard’s impressive Cheltenham Gold Cup win, again under Blackmore. The pair also teamed up for Honeysuckle’s second straight win in the Champion Hurdle.

Unfortunately, later in the year, the racing world was shocked to hear of the death of Henry de Bromhead’s son Jack. Jack, who was just 13 years old, was a familiar face in racing and passed away after suffering fatal injuries in a pony racing fall.

This awful tragedy seems to have spurred Henry on to achieve even bigger and better things in racing, all in the name of his sadly departed son.

In 2023, De Bromhead will again be sending a crack team of horses to Cheltenham. A Plus Tard will look to defend his Gold Cup title, Honeysuckle will be lining up for her last-ever race, this time in the Mares’ Hurdle, whilst a host of talented youngsters will also be looking to give De Bromhead another fantastic Festival.
