The Boston Celtics were one of the eight founder members of the NBA in 1946 and currently compete in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division. The Celtics have won 17 championships, making them the joint most successful NBA team of all time alongside their great rival, the Los Angeles Lakers. In fact, the Celtics and Lakers have battled it out in the Championship game 12 times, and the rivalry is one of the fiercest in all of sport.
The first ten years of the Celtics’ existence were pretty uneventful, as the team failed to win a division title. However, the franchise’s trajectory changed forever with the signing of Bill Russell in the 1956 NBA draft. Russell is one of the greatest players of all time, and his dominant defensive play and leadership led the Celtics to 11 NBA Championships in 13 years.
No-one could beat the Celtics from 1956 to 1969! However, one team to try was the Lakers, which is where the strong rivalry was forged. Fans in the 60s got to see Russell face-off with fellow Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain.
The Celtics enjoyed success following Russell’s retirement, winning Championships in 1974 and 1976. However, the team took a big step forward in the early 1980s, built around the fabled ‘Big 3’. Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale played together until 1992 on the way win three NBA Championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986, and a further two conference titles in 1985 and 1987. Those Championship game losses were against the Celtics old rivals the Lakers, led by Magic Johnson.
After the Big 3 disbanded in 1992, the Celtics endured more than a decades of struggles until two trades changed the fortunes of the struggling giant. Paul Pierce was Celtics’ shining light since being drafted in 1998, but he lacked the support to elevate the team to win championships. This all changed in 2007 when the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Ray Allen from the Seattle SuperSonics.
The new ‘Big 3’, who all went on to be honored in the NBA Hall of Fame, engineered the greatest single-season turnaround in NBA history. The team posted a 42-game record improvement in 2007/08 compared to the prior season. The team put aside some early postseason nerves, and the 2008 Celtics claimed their 17th NBA Championship. Their opponents? None other than the LA Lakers.
Despite not winning a championship since 2008, Celtics fans have got plenty of reason to be excited. The team, led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, made the conference finals in 2018 and 2020, and made the 2022 NBA Finals, losing in six to Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. With Brown and Tatum as the young core of this franchise, and backing from veterans like Al Horford and Marcus Smart, it seems only a matter of time until the Celtics lay claim to an unprecedented 18th championship.
