Dallas Mavericks History

The Dallas Mavericks were formed in 1980 as an expansion franchise after a couple of years of trying to get a basketball team in Dallas. The team name was chosen by postcard vote, with Mavericks beating out other options like Wranglers and Express.

The Mavericks found the going tough for the first few years, which is pretty normal for an expansion team. Three heavy losing seasons in a row gave the franchise an early glimpse of how ruthless the NBA can be. However, lessons were learned by the fourth season, and the Mavericks posted a winning record in 1983/84 (43-39). The franchise also claimed its first NBA playoffs win that year.

During the 1980s, Dallas became known for smart NBA Draft picks that helped to boost the team with quality. Players like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, and Jay Vicent helped the team establish itself in the playoffs. Following that breakthrough campaign, the team made the postseason five consecutive times and six out of seven seasons.

By 1990, the franchise’s best players had gone to other teams. Losing these players to frees or trades left the Mavericks in a tricky situation that it could not get out of for most of the next decade. Between 1990 and 2000, the Dallas Mavericks didn’t make it to the postseason and suffered a losing season each year.

A change in fortunes came in the 1998/99 season when the franchise brought in forward Dirk Nowitzki and point guard Steve Nash. Then in 2000, billionaire internet entrepreneur Mark Cuban bought the franchise, giving the Mavericks funds to build a good team. Cuban also upgraded the facilities, making the franchise more attractive to players.

Nowitzki, Nash, and new sharpshooter Michael Finley took the team back to the playoffs after a 10-season absence during the 2000/01 season. Dallas would make the playoffs for the next 12 consecutive seasons, reaching the conference finals in 2002/03 and the franchise’s first NBA Finals in 2005/06. However, the team lost to the Miami Heat.

The Mavericks kept pushing in the postseason and finally got revenge over the Heat in the 2010/11 NBA Finals, beating them 4-2. Nowitzki claimed the Finals MVP award with help from future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd.

The greatest team in Mavericks history started to age and fell from the playoffs in 2012/13. This was the first time the team didn’t make the postseason in 12 seasons. However, the franchise still had decent success, making the playoffs six times in 8 years. However, each of these postseason trips ended in the first round.

The team finally made a jump in 2021/22, making it to the conference finals for the first time in many years. However, the team lost to the Golden State Warriors but gave fans hope for the future. With star center Luka Donic, who won consecutive NBA MVP awards in 2020 and 2021, the Mavericks may add another NBA Championship to its collection in the future.
