The Houston Rockets started in 1967 as an expansion franchise in San Diego, the only team added to the NBA for the 1967/68 season. The San Diego Rockets went for four consecutive losing seasons but posted a strong enough record to reach the playoffs in their second year.
Texas Sports Investments bought the team in 1971, and the company relocated the team to Texas. However, the move didn’t break any immediate success, as the team went three more years without making it to the playoffs.
After finding a permanent stadium at the Summit, the Rockets finally started to come together as a team. The franchise added Moses Malone and made it to the postseason in six of the eight seasons from 1974/75. This included a trip to the NBA Finals in the 1980/81 season, but the team lost to the Larry Bird-led Boston Celtics.
However, the team traded Malone to the Philadelphia 76ers and posted the worst record in the league. However, this allowed the team to win the first pick in the 1983 Draft, which it used to acquire Ralph Sampson. The following year, the team added Hakeem Olajuwon.
Olajuwon’s impact was immediate, coming second to Michael Jordan in the NBA Rookie of the Year vote. During the 1985/86 season, the team flew through the postseason by beating the Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, and the LA Lakers while dropping just three games. In the finals, the Celtics once again proved to be a bridge too far and once again left the Rockets empty-handed.
The franchise maintained its position as a postseason fixture for the rest of the 1980s and all of the 1990s, apart from one year (1991/92). The team also managed to claim back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995, with Olajuwon winning Finals MVP in both.
Those back-to-back finals saw the Rockets beat the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic. The team, including Olajuwon, Robert Horry, Clyde Drexler, and Sam Cassell, is probably the best in the franchise’s history. When the team brought in perennial All-Star Charles Barkley in 1996, there was a chance of a dynasty happening.
However, it just didn’t happen for the Rockets. Despite having three all-time greats on the roster in Barkley, Olajuwon, and Drexler, the team didn’t win another championship or conference title. Still, the Rockets continued to make the playoffs every year until 2000.
Since the disbanding of that great team in the 1990s, the team hasn’t made much of a dent in the playoffs. Even though the franchise has been a regular in the postseason and put together some exciting teams, it hasn’t been enough for the Rockets to progress past the conference finals. Fans hope the glory days of past teams will come back soon.
