Los Angeles Lakers History

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most famous teams in basketball and the joint most successful franchise in the history of the NBA alongside the Boston Celtics. The team has become synonymous with the city it calls home, but some basketball fans may not know that the franchise’s history actually starts across the country in Michigan.

The disbanded Detroit Gems were bought and moved to Minnesota, where the team became the Minnesota Lakers, named after the many lakes in the region. The team spent two seasons playing in the National Basketball League (NBL) before joining the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948/49, winning the championship.

When the BAA and NBL merged to become the NBA, the Lakers were one of the first franchises in the league. More than that, they were the first dynasty team in the league, clinching the NBA Championship four times over the first five years.

The team moved to Los Angeles before the 1960/61 season and started a new era. However, this era started very successfully, with the team reaching the NBA Finals in 10 of their first 13 seasons in Los Angeles. However, only one of those Finals appearances was a win, with six defeats to the Boston Celtics, sparking a rivalry that burns strong to this day.

In the 1971/72 season, the Lakers, driven by Wilt Chamberlain and Gail Goodrich, set records for the longest winning streak (33 games) and won the NBA Championship by beating the New York Knicks. In the following year, the Lakers once again made the Finals, but this time lost to the Knicks.

The rest of the ‘70s saw a relative downturn in fortunes until the team selected Magic Johnson as the first pick in the 1979 NBA draft. Johnson was an electric performer out of the gate and put together one of the best rookie seasons of all time. He joined top scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in forming a stunning team that won the NBA championship in 1980, ‘82, ‘85, ‘87 and ‘88 while losing in the Finals in 1983, ’84, ’89 and ‘91.

This was known as the “Showtime” era because of the outstanding quality on the court and the Hollywood celebrities sitting courtside. The Showtime era continued the Lakers’ fierce rivalry with the Celtics, as three of those NBA Championship wins came against Boston.

During the 1990s, the team was still making the playoffs but didn’t really challenge for the NBA Championship. However, the Lakers didn’t stay unsuccessful for very long and rose back to the top of the pack under the tactics of coach Phil Jackson. His team, which included Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, won three consecutive NBA Championships from 2000 to 2002.

This team gradually faded but still made it to the NBA Finals in 2003/04 and 2007/08. However, the team claimed two more consecutive championships in 2008/09 and 2009/10. After struggling for many years, a trade for LeBron James brought the franchise an NBA Championship in 2020.

This tied the team with the Boston Celtics for the most NBA Championships in the Association’s history with 17. The Lakers have also finished runner-up a record 15 times, making the franchise the most successful in the NBA. Fans of the Lakers will be hoping for more of the same in years to come.
