Memphis Grizzlies History

One of the newest NBA teams, the Memphis Grizzlies, is currently the only major sports team of any kind that is based in Memphis. However, the story of the Grizzlies does not start in the Home of the Blues but in the Great White North of Canada.

In the early 1990s, the NBA wanted to branch out into Canada with two expansion teams. Two new teams debuted in the 1995/96 season in the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies. Both teams struggled in the early years, but the Grizzlies were particularly bad. Over their first three years, the Grizzlies didn’t win more than 19 games. In a disastrous fourth season, the franchise only posted eight wins.

Eight consecutive seasons passed for the Grizzlies without reaching the postseason. During this time, the team went through a big change off the court. The other Canadian team, the Raptors, was a hit in Toronto. However, the Grizzlies didn’t seem to find much love in Vancouver, and attendance fell off a cliff. Things were so bad the team decided to leave the city.

In 2001, the franchise moved to Memphis, becoming the only pro sports team in the city. Once in Memphis, better decisions began to change the team’s fortunes. The addition of Spanish forward Pau Gasol gave the franchise its first All-Star and gave fans someone to get behind. In 2002, Jerry West was brought in as general manager and made important changes.

The 2003/04 season was a breakthrough for the Memphis Grizzlies. During the campaign, the team won 50 games, 22 more than it had ever won before. This was enough for a winning season and a playoff position for the first time in the franchise’s history. In many ways, breaking through the barrier was enough, but it was still disappointing when the team was eliminated in the first round.

However, the floodgates were open, and Memphis made the postseason again in the following two seasons. Gasol was a driving force, helped by shooting guard Bonzi Wells and center Lorenzen Wright. However, once again, the team was unable to progress past the first round. While these three seasons brought potential, the relative success was not to last.

The 2006/07 season was a disaster, with the Grizzlies finishing in last place in the league. West then left as GM, while Gasol made his exit in 2008. It wasn’t until the 2010/11 season that the Grizzlies returned to the playoffs. However, during these years, power forward Zach Randolph emerged as one of the best players to wear a Grizzlies jersey.

The 2010/11 playoffs saw another breakthrough for the franchise, as the team beat the San Antonio Spurs to record its first-ever postseason win. The team took this as a springboard and made a run of seven consecutive trips to the postseason and made it to the conference finals once. The focal point of this team was Marc Gasol, the brother of Grizzlies legend Pau Gasol.

During the 2021/22 season, Memphis finished first in the Western Conference Southwest Division to win its first-ever division title. The future looks bright for the Grizzlies as the franchise looks to bring home its first conference final and NBA Championship win.
