The Milwaukee Bucks were founded in 1968 as an expansion franchise. But it swiftly made its mark on the NBA, winning its first Championship in 1971. This was the quickest that an expansion team in any major professional US sport had won a championship, and a huge reason for this was the drafting of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, was drafted by the Bucks as the first pick in the 1969 NBA draft after the team won a coin toss against the Phoenix Suns. What happened after that coin toss is basketball history. Abdul-Jabbar would immediately turn the Bucks into title contenders on his way to winning three of his six NBA MVP awards. He is now recognized as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
The 1971 season would be the high point, with the pairing of Abdul Jabbar and Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson proving unstoppable. The Bucks posted a 66-16 regular season record and lost only two playoff games on the way to the NBA National Championship.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar left to join the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975. But the Milwaukee Bucks would continue to find divisional success for the next decade. Spearheaded by their 1979 draft pick Sidney Montcrief, the Bucks won seven consecutive titles from 1980. However, they couldn’t convert any of these into Championships.
Following an explosive debut into the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks saw a few lean years, with a single division title in 2001. But in 2013, a second franchise-defining draft pick, Greek teenager Giannis Antetokounmpo helped the Bucks find their Mojo again. While he took a couple of seasons to establish himself, the ‘Greek Freak’ would soon wreak havoc on the league with his incredible size and undefendable Euro-step.
2018-19 would be the next landmark season for the Bucks, with coach Mike Budenholzer appointed and its brand-new, state-of-the-art Fiserv Arena opening. This season would also mark the first divisional title since 2001 and Antetokuonmpo’s first league MVP award. A divisional title followed in 2020, but playoff success was still lacking.
The final puzzle pieces were put together in the offseason before the 2021 season. Antetokuonmpo was penned to the richest-ever player contract in the history of the NBA, and Jrue Holiday was drafted to fire up the starting five alongside fellow standout player Khris Middleton.
These stars led the Bucks to the NBA Championship and Giannis’ second MVP. He is only the third player to win two MVPs before the age of 26, with the others being Lebron James and none other than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
The Bucks’ future remains bright, with the nucleus of the Championship winning team remaining in Milwaukee. Wisconsinites are passionate about the Bucks, and with Giannis, Middleton, and Holiday remaining with the team, you can expect to hear more ‘Bucks in Six’ chants in the postseason in coming years.
