The history of the New Orleans Pelicans is pretty confusing, as the team has had issues with its name and franchise history for years. The franchise was founded in 1988 as a part of an NBA expansion known as the Charlotte Hornets. The team was based in North Carolina.
While the Hornets found it tough during their first seasons, the team eventually made the playoffs during the mid-90s. The 1994/95 season was a true breakthrough, and during the rest of the decade, the team continued to make the postseason. In 1999/00, 2000/01, and 2001/02, the Hornets made the playoffs and went to the conference semifinals twice.
As the team was getting ready to play in the 2001/02 playoffs, the NBA approved the relocation of the franchise to New Orleans. With this move, the team lost their right to keep their history in New Orleans. Effectively, the New Orleans Hornets were a new team. A replacement franchise in North Carolina launched in 2004/05, known as the Charlotte Bobcats.
In 2010, arguably the best player ever bought the Charlotte Bobcats. Now the owner of the team, Michael Jordan, sought to return the Hornets’ name to Charlotte. Following a formal request and approval, the Charlotte Bobcats became the Charlotte Hornets. That name change came into effect for the 2014/15 season.
As for the New Orleans Hornets, the team became the Pelicans. With the name changes, the NBA also classified the franchise as an expansion team with an official league debut in the 2002/03 season when the Hornets relocated. Ironically, that makes the Pelicans the second youngest NBA team after the new Charlotte Hornets.
Over its 18 years in the league, the New Orleans Pelicans have had a solid but unspectacular record. The team was able to make the playoffs in its first two seasons but left in the first round both times. A three-year postseason drought followed before the Pelicans returned with its first-ever playoffs win during the 2007/08 season. This Pelicans team was powered by Chris Paul, known as the “the Point God”, who picked up four NBA All-Star picks during his time with the franchise.
However, the franchise would only make it to the postseason three more times over the next nine seasons. In every season the team made it to the playoffs, it was beaten in the first round. Adding talented players like Anthony Davis didn’t seem to help push the franchise over the hump.
During the 2017/18 season, New Orleans again returned to the playoffs, beating the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. This was the franchise’s first victory in the postseason since its relaunch in 2002.
However, the Pelicans couldn’t build on this momentum and then went three years without playoff basketball. Davis left the team for the Los Angeles Lakers, but the team still has plenty of talent in Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. Pelicans fans want these players to help the team to leave behind the drama of its relocation and bring more success to New Orleans.
