Orlando Magic History

The Orlando Magic joined the NBA in 1988 as one of four expansion teams, led by local businessman Jim L. Hewitt and former Philadelphia 76ers GM Pt Williams. Introducing the Magic to the NBA brought the first-ever major-league pro sports team to Orlando. Joining the NBA alongside other expansion teams, the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves, the team played its first game on November 4, 1989.

That 111-106 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Orlando Arena (O-Rena) told the story of the Magic for their first few years in the NBA, with three consecutive losing seasons. However, the Magic would get a huge boost from the 1992 NBA Draft by picking huge center Shaquille O’Neal from Louisiana State University.

O’Neal was an instant success and game-changer, becoming the first rookie to claim an All-Star position since Michael Jordan. Shaq took the Magic to another level, with the franchise recording a 0.500 win/loss percentage. However, he was unable to power the roster to the NBA playoffs.

Winning the number one draft pick again in 1993 was pivotal for the franchise. This time, the Magic traded its pick (Chris Webber) to the Golden State Warriors for Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway. Combining with O’Neal, Hardaway helped form a winning duo and pushed the Orlando Magic to its first winning season.

During the 1993/94 season, the team reached the playoffs for the first time and picked up its first 50-win season (50-32). All-Star forward Horace Grant joined for the 1994/95 season, and the team claimed the Atlantic Division title and met the reigning champions, the Houston Rockets. Despite being a hot ticket all season, the Magic crumbled to a 4-0 sweep.

That was as good as it was going to get for Orlando, at least for the next 20 years. O’Neal left to join the Los Angele Lakers as a free agent in the 1996 off-season, and Penny Hardaway was injury-plagued for the rest of his career. Many regard Hardaway as one of the biggest “what-if” players in NBA history. Even while fighting injuries, Hardaway was good enough to get the Magic to the playoffs regularly during his career.

Hardaway left the Magic in 1999, but the team still posted winning records in the next four seasons, thanks to the acquisitions of talented players like Tracy McGrady and Mike Miller. However, by 2003/04, the wheels fell off, and the Magic struggled to four consecutive losing seasons.

Even during these bad years, the basis of a new team was forming. The Magic took Dwight Howard with the first pick of the 2004 NBA Draft and took JJ Redick in the 2006 NBA Draft. These two would form the spine of a team that made it back to the playoffs in 2006/07.

However, the peak of this team was 2008/09. The Magic posted a regular season record of 59-23 and beat the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, and LeBron James Cleveland Cavaliers to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. While the team managed to win one game, the Magic lost the series to the Los Angeles Lakers in five.

The Magic failed to reach those heights again, and eventually, this excellent team broke apart. Howard forced a move to the Los Angeles Lakers, and the team went for ten seasons and only posted one winning record.

However, there is hope for Magic fans. After winning the No.1 Draft Pick in 2022, the team took Paulo Banchero. The young core of this team, with players like Jalen Suggs, Bol Bol, Mo Bamba, and Franz Wagner, will hopefully bring an NBA Championship to Orlando.
