The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful expansion teams in NBA history. The team has found a way to be consistently successful in the regular season, with the best win/loss ratio of any team as of 2022.
The Spurs began in Texas when the Dallas Chaparrals launched in the American Basketball Association. While the team performed decently in the league, the franchise was sold to a San Antonio entrepreneur who moved the team to his local city before the 1973/74 season. He also renamed the team the San Antonio Gunslingers, but this changed to the Spurs before any players took to the court.
Change was on the horizon for the franchise soon after as the NBA absorbed the four leading teams from the ABA, the Indian Pacers, Denver Nuggets, New York Nets, and the Spurs.
Pointing to its future as a major competitor, the Spurs defied traditions of expansion teams by immediately posting winning seasons. The Spurs secured a place in the playoffs in their first season and for the following six consecutive years. During this time, the team was led by shooting guard George Gervin, who picked up nine NBA All-Star awards during his stay in San Antonio.
Sometimes teams go through periods of success and then drop off. However, the Spurs just kept winning and made the playoffs 18 times over the next 22 seasons. Even with such consistency, the team struggled in the playoffs and never made it to the NBA Finals.
The Spurs made it to the conference finals in the 1994/95 season but lost to the Houston Rockets. Even with top players like Dennis Rodman and David Robinson, the team still couldn’t make it to an NBA Championship game. Rodman left for the Micahel Jordan-led Chicago Bulls.
The 1996/97 season was awful for the Spurs as the team fell to a 20-62 losing campaign. However, in the 2007 offseason, the team won the NBA Draft lottery and chose forward Tim Duncan as the first pick. Duncan, alongside franchise star Robinson, got the team back on track.
Alongside the star duo, head coach Greg Popovich was becoming one of the most astute and dangerous tacticians in the NBA. This trio of quality started to show in the 1998/99 season when the Spurs finally claimed an NBA Championship. This opened the floodgates for the Spurs, and the team kept challenging for years to come.
In 2003, the Spurs claimed their second NBA Finals win by defeating fellow expansion team, the New York Nets. It was a fitting end to Robinson’s career after he had waited so long to deliver glory to the franchise. Even with Robinson gone, the Spurs remained formidable thanks to the addition of rising stars like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.
The Spurs went back to the NBA Finals again in 2005 and 2007, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons, respectively. For the 2010/11 season, the team claimed an all-time NBA record by securing its 12th consecutive season with at least 50 wins.
The Spurs continued to threaten, losing the NBA Finals to the Miami Heat in 2012/13 before getting revenge on the Heat and claiming the 2013/14 NBA Championship. The team continues to challenge under the leadership of coach Popovich, and fans are hopeful more Championships will come to San Antonio soon.
