Toronto Raptors History

While there are millions of NBA fans in Canada, it took until 1995 until any teams launched in the country. The Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors both launched as expansion franchises in the same year, but after the Grizzlies moved to Memphis, the Raptors became the Great White North’s only NBA team.

The early years were rough for the Raptors, which is pretty normal for most expansion franchises. Following the trend of other expansion teams, the Raptors ended their struggles through a trade. In 1998, the Canadian team traded for Vince Carter, who the Golden State Warriors had just drafted. Carter led the Raptors to their first postseason appearance in 2000, and the team continued to make the playoffs for the next couple of years. During this success, the Raptors set NBA attendance records, proving a franchise in Canada could be successful.

However, 2003 to 2006 was a tricky period for the Raptors, with little success on the court. Things got worse when Carter was traded to the New Jersey Nets. After securing 2007 No.1 Draft pick Andrea Bargnani and the emergence of Chris Bosh as the team’s leader, the Raptors upset the odds to win their first-ever division title. Even with this regular season success, the Raptors still couldn’t make it count in the postseason.

The 2013 season was crucial for the history of the Raptors and was the start of a long period of success. However, the foundations of that success were already in place through 2009 draft pick DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, who the team picked up in 2012. With this pair of talented ballers, the Raptors made the postseason every year from 2013 to 2018. During this time, the team also secured four division titles and made the conference finals for the first time. LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers ended that dream, but a championship felt close.

The 2018-19 season will forever go down as one of the greatest in Canadian sporting history. DeRozan was traded away for the incredibly talented but unpredictable Kawhi Leonard. The franchise also picked up Marc Gasol to add some steel, and Pascal Siakam started to emerge from within the roster and dominate games.

The Raptors went into the season with a rookie NBA head coach, Nick Nurse, and the success that followed was better than anyone imagined. The Raptors rolled to 58-24 in the regular season to claim the division title and second seed in the Eastern Conference.

After beating the Orlando Magic 4-1, the Raptors would face the Philadelphia 76ers in the conference semifinals. The series would go to a seventh game in the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, where Kawhi Leonard made history. Tied at 90-90 with four seconds on the clock, Leonard hit the first ever Game 7 buzzer-beater in playoff history, with the ball bouncing agonizingly four times off the rim before settling and unleashing pandemonium in Toronto.

The Raptors went on to beat the Milwaukee Bucks in the conference final and the all-conquering Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals 4-2, with a Finals MVP performance from Leonard. Leonard moved on after that one magical season, but he etched his name into Raptors’ history forever.

Even without Leonard, the Raptors remain a threat in the playoffs with the talent of Siakam. Other NBA teams will want to avoid traveling north of the border in the postseason to such a dangerous opponent and vocal crowd.
