The Utah Jazz competes in the Western Conference, Northwest Division of the NBA and plays their home games at the Vivint Arena. While the team had a rocky history to start, the franchise has become a consistent force in the playoffs over the last 30 years.
The franchise was actually founded in New Orleans and was known as the New Orleans Jazz. The team actually took its name from its original home, as New Orleans is synonymous with jazz music. While many new NBA franchises struggle for the first couple of years, the Jazz took this to the next level by failing to make the playoffs for their first ten years.
Even without much success, the team was great to watch. Pete Maravich, who was picked for the NBA All-Stars five times during his stay with the Jazz, was the star guard for the team. He put up huge points for the franchise and was a highlight for fans who watched games. His number 7 jersey is now retired by the franchise.
Financial problems struck the team in New Orleans, forcing the team to relocate to Utah. Controversially, the team kept the Jazz name, preventing any future New Orleans teams from using this nickname. The Jazz became the only sports team in the big four leagues to play in Utah but still struggled to find any success.
The team finally made a breakthrough by making it to the playoffs in 1983/84, but things were about to get even better for the franchise. A couple of drafts in the 1980s allowed the team to thrive, with the team adding John Stockton in the 1984 Draft and Karl Malone in the 1985 Draft.
It is ironic looking back that fans booed the choice of Stockton, who went on to make the NBA All-Star ten times during his career and have his number 12 retired by the Jazz. Meanwhile, Malone was a 14 NBA All-Star pick and two-time NBA MVP across his career. He played for 18 years with the Jazz and also has his number 32 retired by the franchise. Stockton and Malone were a devastating pair known for the pick-and-roll maneuver.
Between 1984 and 2003, the Jazz made the playoffs every season, a 20-year stretch. Stockton was there for every year of that success, with Malone only missing the first season. These two were the backbone of this franchise and the two most important players in its history.
Malone and Stockton are also huge players in the history of the NBA, with Malone retiring as the second-highest-scoring player in NBA history. He is now third. Stockton still holds the record for the most assists and steals in NBA history.
The Utah Jazz couldn't win an NBA Championship even with two of the best players the NBA has ever seen. The closest the franchise came was in 1997 and 1998, when the Jazz made the NBA Finals in both seasons. However, the team met Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in both years,, with the Bulls beating the Jazz in Jordan’s ‘last dance’ in 1998.
After the 20-year streak to 2003, the Jazz missed the postseason for three years. However, the team returned to the playoffs quickly after this. The team made the playoffs 12 times out of 19 attempts up to 2021, with players like Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Rudy Gobert.
