The Arizona Coyotes, formerly the Phoenix Coyotes and, before that, the Winnipeg Jets, are the longest-tenured franchise in the NHL to have never reached the Stanley Cup finals. Dating all the way back to the 1970s, the franchise existed as the Winnipeg Jets until their move to Phoenix in 1996. Their time in Arizona has never seen the team fully settle, through a combination of arena issues, ownership changes and low attendance figures.
On the ice, the story hasn’t been much better. Between 2012 and 2022, the Coyotes failed to make the playoffs proper once. A solitary victory in the one-off ‘qualifying round’ was one possible exception, during the Covid-impacted 2019-2020 season, depending on your point of view. On that occasion, the Coyotes were still well beaten once they faced the Colorado Avalanche in the first round.
Despite the lack of success and frequency of changes, the Coyotes have been home to some noteworthy players. Among them, Shane Doan and Keith Tkachuk are perhaps the most revered and respected, with current NHL superstar Auston Matthews citing Doan as one of his favorite players whilst growing up in Arizona. Doan leads the organization in games played, goals and points, and he is the only Coyote to have his number retired by the franchise. The number 19 can be seen hanging from the rafters wherever the Coyotes happen to call home at any given time.
The team also hold the claim-to-fame of being the only NHL franchise to have been managed by The Great One, Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky was head coach of the Coyotes for four seasons from 2005 to 2009, but management didn’t come as easily to him as playing the game, as he never guided his charges to the postseason.
