Buffalo Sabres History

The Buffalo Sabres celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2020, having joined the NHL ahead of the 1970-71 season. It has been a lean half century in Buffalo, with successes being few and far between. The Sabres have competed in just two Stanley Cup Finals, losing on both occasions. However, Buffalo have won the Wales Conference twice, as well as being the last team to win the Eastern Conference in the 20th Century.

The 2010s were hugely disappointing years for fans in Buffalo, with the team failing to make the playoffs each season after 2011. In fact, the 2010-11 season was the only campaign where the Sabres actually managed a positive goal differential, with each subsequent year adding to the frustration and disappointment.

Must be 21+ to participate. T&Cs apply.

A top-10 pick in the NHL entry draft each year from 2013 does not seem to have done the trick yet, as the Sabres have continually seemed to squander their opportunity to rebuild. There have been signs of improvement more recently, as offensive defenseman Rasmus Dahlin continues to develop into the elite D-man that the Sabres had hoped for when selecting him first overall in 2018. Many fans in Buffalo had lost all hope when Jack Eichel demanded a trade, eventually leaving for Vegas in a deal that brought Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch in the opposite direction. Such was the impact that Tuch made, however, as well as his obvious passion for the team, that the loss of Eichel does not seem to have been as significant as originally feared.

Despite being one of three teams based in New York state, most Sabres fans would consider Boston, Toronto or even Ottawa as their biggest rivals. Unfortunately, many Sabres fans would also consider themselves to be their own worst enemy, though the tide seems to be turning on that front.
