Calgary Flames History

One half of the Battle of Alberta rivalry, the Calgary Flames have been in existence since the start of the 1980s. Previously, the franchise had been based in Atlanta for eight seasons, before the franchise were relocated north of the border in 1980. Within their first decade, the Calgary version of the Flames had won two Presidents’ Trophies, two Conference championships, three Division championships and a Stanley Cup.

Their Stanley Cup victory came in 1989, as goaltender Mike Vernon and defenseman Al MacInnis led the Flames to victory over Montreal Canadiens, winning the series 4-2 on the road, in the Montreal Forum. The victory was particularly sweet for the Flames, who had watched their state rivals, the Edmonton Oilers, win the cup in four of the previous five seasons, led by Wayne Gretzky. The 1988-89 success was to be the last Conference championship victory in Calgary for some 15 years, until the 2003-04 Flames made their way to the Stanley Cup finals again, only to be defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games.

The Flames have retired three jerseys to the rafters. The first Flame to have the honor bestowed upon him was Lanny McDonald, an Alberta native who co-captained the team to their Stanley Cup triumph in 1989. McDonald scored the second goal in the cup-clinching victory over the Montreal Canadiens, which would transpire to be the final game of his Hall of Fame career.

The goaltender in that game, the aforementioned Vernon, was also honored for his two spells with the Flames, having amassed 262 wins in 13 seasons. More recently, Jarome Iginla had his #13 jersey retired, and to this day leads the team in games played, goals and points, among other metrics.
