Carolina Hurricanes History

Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes have been an NHL franchise for over a quarter of a century. The franchise moved to Raleigh from Massachusetts in 1997, having originally been the Hartford Whalers, who had competed in the league from 1979. With limited scope to grow the team in Hartford, the decision was made to relocate south. Teething problems with arenas and television coverage caused some initial headaches for the Hurricanes, but the on-ice success wasn’t far away.

Within five years of the move to Raleigh, the Hurricanes were in the Stanley Cup Finals, they had their new home arena and were seeing attendances increase, year-on-year. The 2002 cup run ended in a 4-1 series defeat against the Red Wings, but the impact it had upon the franchise and the local market was immense. It was to be only four years until the team returned to the finals, this time winning the 2006 Stanley Cup in a Game 7 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. This triumph also gave the state of North Carolina its first men’s major league professional championship.

Among the franchise legends are Ron Francis, who played in both Hartford and Carolina, and holds the points record for the combined organization with 1,175. Francis is one of three players to have their jersey numbers officially retired, along with Glen Wesley and Rod Brind’Amour, both of whom were part of the 2006 cup-winning side. Brind’Amour would also later return to coach the side and won the Jack Adams Award in 2020-21.

In 2019, the Hurricanes caused a stir in the hockey world with the “Storm Surge” celebrations on the ice after victories. The subsequent fallout with Don Cherry caused the Carolina supporters and management team to affectionately refer to themselves as a “Bunch of Jerks”, recycling the very same phrase that Cherry had intended to demean the players.
