Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets joined the NHL at the turn of the 21st Century, making their debut alongside the Minnesota Wild in the 2000-01 season. Success has been thin on the ground in Columbus, with the team winning just two playoff rounds in their first twenty seasons, the first of which came, eventually, in 2018-19. Despite their lack of success, the Blue Jackets have only held the first overall pick in the NHL draft on one occasion. 

That pick, back in 2002, was Rick Nash, who went on to become the franchise’s one and only retired number. Nash shared the Rocket Richard trophy as the NHL’s joint top goalscorer in 2003-04, scoring 41 goals. Nash holds the record for most Blue Jackets’ points, with 547 points in 674 games. Another notable individual who achieved success with Columbus is Sergei Bobrovsky, who won the Vezina Trophy twice in a five-season spell, whilst tending the Blue Jackets’ net.

In 2013, the Blue Jackets announced Jarmo Kekäläinen as their general manager, making them the first team in the history of the National Hockey League to appoint a European GM.
