Dallas Stars History

Coming into existence in 1993, the Dallas Stars were the continuation of the Minnesota North Stars franchise, who had been in the National Hockey League since 1967. Dropping the “North” from their name while relocating south, this move was part of an ongoing experimental venture by the league, moving into less ‘traditional’ hockey markets in sunshine states, alongside the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers, who joined the league around the same time.

Within just six seasons in Dallas, the Stars had won three divisional titles, two Presidents’ Trophies, a conference championship and, in their first visit to the finals, a Stanley Cup. A 4-2 series win over the Sabres gave the Stars their proudest moment, having already defeated Edmonton, St. Louis, and Colorado on their journey. The winning goal was scored in the third period of overtime by Brett Hull, allowing him to emulate the success of his father Bobby, in his fourteenth postseason campaign.

Another visit to the finals followed the very next season but ended in defeat to the New Jersey Devils. It would be a full two decades before the Stars made their way back to the Stanley Cup Finals, this time facing the Tampa Bay Lightning. The result, unfortunately for Dallas, would be the same as it was twenty years previous, as they fell to a 4-2 series loss against the Eastern Conference champions.

Mike Modano remains the most iconic Star, leading the franchise in a multitude of key statistics, including games played, goals, assists and points.
