The Florida Panthers, along with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, joined the National Hockey League as an expansion team, ahead of the 1993-94 season. This brought the number of new teams in the league that decade to five, following the previous expansions into San Jose, Ottawa and Tampa Bay. The Panthers hit the ground running, recording the most successful season by an expansion team up to that point, with 83 points in their first campaign. It wasn’t enough to take them to the playoffs that year, but the Stanley Cup Finals weren’t far away.
The Panthers reached the playoffs for the first time in 1995-96, and navigated their way past the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins, to face the Colorado Avalanche in the finals. It wasn’t to be however, as the Panthers were swept 4-0 in that series, scoring just four goals against an in-form Patrick Roy.

The Conference Finals victory over the Penguins in 1996 would be the last series win for the Panthers for a quarter of a century, until they finally managed a victory over the Washington Capitals in the first round in 2021-2022. The Panthers had been among the favorites in the Stanley Cup betting that season, having won the Presidents’ Trophy with 122 points, the fourth-highest total since the trophy was introduced in the mid-1980s.
Just one player has had his Panthers’ jersey hoisted up to the rafters. That man was Roberto Luongo, who played in Sunrise for 11 seasons, during two spells with the organisation. Luongo holds the franchise records for goaltender games played, wins and shutouts.
