The Ottawa Senators celebrated thirty years in the National Hockey League in 2022, having joined as an expansion team for the 1992-93 season. Named after the first hockey club in Ottawa, which existed from 1883 to 1954, the Senators received great support from the local public but were not a success straight out of the gate. Losing 131 of their first 168 games in the league, the Senators allowed almost twice as many goals as they scored in their first two seasons.
Things would begin to turn, however, as they made the playoffs by their fifth season, and would go on to add 10 more consecutive visits to the postseason. There were also four Northeast Division banners raised over that era. The closest the Sens have come to the cup was a defeat in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006-07, losing to the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
Must be 21+ to participate. T&Cs apply.
The Senators have also seen their share of individual success, with Daniel Alfredsson and Erik Karlsson both dominating during their respective times in Ottawa. Alongside Chris Phillips, Alfredsson is one of only two players from the modern-day Senators to have his jersey retired, having led the team in goals, assists and points. Alfredsson finished his career just one game short of the franchise record for games played, behind Phillips. Erik Karlsson won two Norris Trophies in his time as a Sen, whilst also being named an All-Star on four occasions.
In more recent years, a rebuild has taken shape in Ottawa, with a new and exciting young core of players leading the way, captained by Brady Tkachuk. Brady followed in the footsteps of his brother Matthew and father Keith, in becoming a first round draft pick and going on to make a successful career in the show.
