Pittsburgh Penguins History

There aren’t many teams in the NHL who can claim to have been as fortunate as the Penguins have been, to have witnessed some of the greats of the sport over their lifetime. Names like Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are just a select few who have called Pittsburgh their home, and each are rightly considered to be amongst hockey royalty.

Established in the expansion draft of 1967, as the league doubled from six teams to 12, the Penguins would have to wait until the 1990s until they tasted success. Success came in the shape of a 6ft 4in, 235-lb center from Quebec, named Mario. Exploding into the NHL in 1984-85, Lemieux would record over 100 points in each of his first six seasons, despite regularly missing a large number of games due to injury. He holds a wide range of NHL scoring records, coming second only to Wayne Gretzky in others, but perhaps his most interesting record is that he is the only player in the history of the league to score five different types of goal in one game. That achievement came on New Year’s Eve in 1988, against the New Jersey Devils, as Lemieux scored at even-strength, on the powerplay and penalty-kill, from a penalty shot, and finally, into an empty net.

Super Mario would lead the Penguins to their first two Stanley Cups, in 1991 and 1992, and later passed the baton on to Sidney Crosby, who would go one better and win three championships in Pittsburgh, in 2009, 2016 and 2017. With Lemieux watching on from the owner’s box, Crosby has delivered on the incredible hype that accompanied him when he joined the league as the first overall pick in 2005. Crosby picked up 200 career points several months before he had even turned 20 years of age, and would go on to become just the sixth player in NHL history to win multiple Conn Smythe trophies, just as his owner and mentor had done back in 1991 and 1992.
