In their wildest dreams, it isn’t likely that the Tampa Bay Lightning organisation could have conceived the success that they would have in their first three decades in the National Hockey League. It is probably even less likely that they would have expected to have won three cups before their thirtieth anniversary in the league, considering the lack of success in their first decade in the league. From their inaugural season in the Campbell Conference in 1992-93, the Lightning failed to make the playoffs in nine of their first ten campaigns. The one season they did make the playoffs, they suffered a first round exit.
Fast forward to today, and Tampa is one of the most decorated franchises in recent history. Since the turn of the century, they have amassed three Stanley Cups, four Conference titles, four divisional titles and a Presidents’ Trophy. The Lightning would win a Stanley Cup in both of the Covid-shortened seasons, 2019-20 and 2020-21, becoming just the second team this century to win back-to-back championships.
Must be 21+ to participate. T&Cs apply.
There are only two jerseys retired to the rafters at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, those of Martin St. Louis and Vincent LeCavalier, two players who were instrumental in the earlier successes of the franchise. There are likely to be some more numbers joining them in retirement in the coming years, with Steven Stamkos now leading the franchise in goals and points, Andrei Vasilevskiy leading in goaltender games played and wins, and Victor Hedman a Norris and Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
Nikita Kucherov, who missed extended periods of time through injury, has the record for the most points per game in franchise history, and has a Hart Trophy and an Art Ross Trophy to his name, also.
