Winnipeg Jets History

Although there is no direct relation, the current iteration of the Winnipeg Jets is a continuation of the previous franchise of the same name, which competed in the WHA/NHL up until 1996, before relocating to Phoenix. The current version of the Jets came into existence in 2011, the most recent franchise relocation in the NHL, after the Atlanta Thrashers were purchased by True North Sports.

Atlanta’s franchise had existed for just 12 seasons, including the year that was lost to the 2004-05 lockout, and had struggled to gain a foothold in the competitive Atlanta sports market. Their only success was a solitary Southeast Division title in 2006-07, which resulted in their only playoff appearance, and a single series against the Rangers which ended in a 4-0 series defeat.

There was to be no instant success in Winnipeg either, as the team failed to make the playoffs in five of their first six seasons, and failed to win a single game in the playoffs until 2018, eventually making the Conference Finals that season, before losing to the brand-new Vegas Golden Knights.

With a decade under their belts now, the Jets are firmly established as one of the key NHL franchises, with a fervent fanbase and consistent attendances. The Jets have relied upon goaltender Connor Hellebuyck heavily in recent years. From 2015-16 to 2021-22, no goalie in the league played or started as many games as Hellebuyck, who is also fourth in wins over that period.

At the opposite end of the ice, forwards Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler both rank in the top three overall in franchise history for points. Wheeler is the only player to have recorded 500 assists for the combined Thrashers/Jets organisation.
