Gillingham's season to date doesn't make impressive reading and with the side sitting seventeenth in the League One table something clearly needs to be done. A new manager would perhaps be the way forward and to this end the Gills decided to wave goodbye to Justin Edinburgh and look to someone new.
Who that person will be remains to be seen but his remit will be pretty clear - steer the side back towards the play-offs. It will be no mean feat given that despite this being Gillingham's clear aim at the start of the campaign, the Medway outfit currently sit ten points adrift from the top-six places and recent defeats to Millwall and Oxford United have sent them closer to the bottom four.
Former Gillingham player Adrian Pennock could be the man to turn to and if the odds are anything to go by he appears pretty much 'nailed-on' to become next permanent manager at Priestfield. Pennock made 168 appearances for Gillingham in a seven-year spell at the club and whilst his managerial experience is purely non-league he would nevertheless prove a favourite amongst supporters.
Ian Hendon is another frontrunner in the betting market, the former Leyton Orient boss sacked from his position at Brisbane Road following a string of poor results although at odds of 6/1 he is currently very much a rank outsider.
Dennis Wise is an interesting possibility and at odds of just 10/1 it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that we could be seeing the former England and Chelsea midfielder at Priestfield sometime soon. Wise was player-manager with local rivals Millwall as well as manager of Swindon Town and Leeds United. Following his departure from Elland Road in 2008 he was appointed Executive Director of Football at Newcastle United and he might relish the chance to return to management, albeit at a relatively modest level. Perhaps.
