Once again Scotland find themselves in the wilderness when it comes to major international competitions with the Scots losing out on a place at next summer's World Cup. It was really a case of too little and too late with an eleventh-hour surge in form insufficient to send them into second place. England had it in the bag long ago and in all honesty the Three Lions didn't need to be at their best to clinch top-spot in what was a far from difficult qualifying group. In that regard, England failed to disappoint and they went through their qualifying campaign with the usual lack of gusto and imagination. The same could be said for Scotland perhaps and whilst their recent outings have shown more in the way of spirit, they just couldn't being themselves to commit to a trip to Russia.

Gordon Strachan's tactics came in for plenty of criticism following the disappointing 2-2 draw with Slovenia and rightly so. The tactics which had served the Scots so well in recent outings were abandoned as the side put in what was almost certainly one of their most dismal performances of the entire campaign and this could result in the departure of Gordon Strachan. At least that is what an increasingly large proportion of the Tartan Army are hoping.

Strachan has now failed to take his side into two major international tournaments although despite the mounting criticism, Paddy Power Free Bets still go odds-on at 8/11 that Strachan will live to fight another day in the Scotland hot-seat. The Irish bookmaker is also offering odds on who his likely successor be should he leave the building with former Manchester United boss David Moyes current favourite at odds of 17/10. Malky Mackay and former Scotland boss Alex Mcleish sit next in the Paddy Power betting at 4/1 apiece with highly-rated Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes priced at 7/1 to take over the national side. Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill is 10/1 for the Scotland job, the Irishman having been successful in leading his side into the play-offs for next summer's World Cup.

Will we see change at the top or will Gordon Strachan stay put for the foreseeable? We may soon find out...
